For broad rune volume, a Kurast Undercity run with a Greater Tribute of Harmony is the better choice in Diablo 4 when Torment 10 or higher, active Energy Towers, a Level 4 reward bar, and a boss finish are all in place. Lair of Runes wins for a fixed Jah, Vex, or Thul target because its Lair Boss tables are fixed. In-game farming remains the baseline, while some players use Diablo 4 runes to cover an early gap before a focused session.
Choose the Route by the Rune You Need
Lesser, standard, and Greater Tribute of Harmony all add rune rewards, and none needs an upgrade first. That makes Harmony the flexible choice for a larger end-of-run pile, not a replacement for a named runeword recipe. Lair of Runes is a one-point War Plan node that unlocks fixed Lair Boss rune tables, so it wins when the missing stone is known in advance.
Route Best Use Required Setup Result to Track
Kurast Undercity with Greater Tribute of Harmony Broad rune volume Torment 10+, Energy Towers, Level 4 reward bar Runes per focused run
Lair of Runes Exact Jah, Vex, or Thul One War Plan point Target rune appearance
Countess in Forgotten Tower Waking Nightmare route Rotspill Delta, Hawezar, floor 5 Seasonal rune haul
Horadric Cube Ohm progress 2 Vex plus a Flawless Emerald Craft progress, not a boss drop
Ohm belongs in a separate bucket. It has no known Lair Boss drop, so craft Ohm from 2 Vex plus a Flawless Emerald in the Horadric Cube when a ladder path would burn too many Mal. That is craft progress, not a boss-run result.
Run the Harmony Test with a Fixed Setup
A clean Harmony comparison is a reward-bar race, not a full-clear contest; at Torment 10 or higher, full clears are slower for this goal.
From the Kurast Undercity entry screen, open the difficulty selector and choose Torment 10 or higher. Record the region timer band and your remaining Tributes before entering.
At the Tribute choice panel, select the intended Lesser, standard, or Greater Tribute of Harmony. Check the tier before confirming so a valuable Tribute does not go into the wrong run.
Inside Kurast Undercity, activate the Energy Towers and push the reward bar to Level 4. The visible Level 4 reading is the run checkpoint.
After Level 4 appears, go to the boss and finish. Group runs can raise efficiency, and the Tribute effect on the final boss helps secure the rune count you came for.
After the run, screenshot the rune haul and remaining Tributes, then stash the runes by recipe. This gives each result a record instead of a memory-based estimate.
Keep solo and group runs in separate comparisons. Keep Kurast Undercity Greater Tribute Harmony Runes comparisons limited to runs with the same difficulty and region timer band; a different setup can make a slower full clear look better or worse for the wrong reason.
Protect the Haul from Hidden Losses
Inventory mistakes erase more value than a small route-speed difference. Deposit spare materials into station or stash storage before the next block, then keep rune piles sorted by recipe. Do not ladder surplus Tir and Eth into the wrong craft, and do not ladder your last Tal into Ral if Spirit still needs Tal.
Keep white Ancestral bases for Ancestral Runewords; Item Power carries into the finished Unique-style Runeword result. After each run, mark a fail as pathing, tempo, or greed. Stop while one recovery plan remains, and close the night with one successful extract or clear plus one blocker before fatigue creates a new greed plan.
Use Fixed Tables for Exact Targets
Choose Lair of Runes when a named rune matters more than a flexible pile. The one-point War Plan unlock and fixed tables give Jah from Beast in the Ice, Vex from the Butcher, and Thul from Varshan a cleaner target than Harmony farming. Players who prefer Waking Nightmare routes can keep Countess in Forgotten Tower as a separate seasonal option.
Do not mix Mal, Ist, Spirit, or Infinity craft tracking into this comparison. Write the missing ingredient before opening the Cube, confirm the current live panel before the next session, and keep the route choice tied to the rune you actually need.
Before the next block, open the live client, confirm Torment 10 or higher, count the remaining Harmony Tributes, and write the missing rune before using the Horadric Cube. Keep D4 Gold for sale outside the run tally as a separate fallback, then start the route that matches the target and stop after one clear and one blocker. |
